In the north-east of Tanzania, located in the shadow of the majestic
Mount Kilimanjaro, there is a beautiful volcano with fertile slopes that reaches a height of 4,566 metres. Mount Meru is the second highest mountain of Tanzania and the centerpiece of the Arusha National Park with its surrounding savannah. The different vegetation zones and the diverse wildlife turn Mount Meru into much more than an excellent acclimatisation walk for the Kilimanjaro.
The route to the summit passes through parkland, ancient forest with strange trees, a giant heather zone and a rocky moorland. Along the trail over 400 species of birds, buffalos, baboons and giraffes can be found.
While the Trek takes normally three nights and four days it can also be done within two nights and three days, but nevertheless the flag of Tanzania, a milestone with the height of the "Socialist Peak" (the peak of Mount Meru) and stunning views of the Meru Ash Cone and the Kilimanjaro are waiting for the successful trekkers.
A park ranger is indispensable and prescribed within the rules of the national park as he protects trekkers from the wildlife. Tents are not common at Mount Meru, but small well-tended huts invite everybody to stay one night after an exhausting trekking day.
