Mt. Fitzroy is, besides the Aconcagua, Argentina's most renowned mountain. Unlike its much higher brother it is much more accessible and easier to hike thanks to a well established trail and campsite system. It is a bit far off from the rest of the world but if you visit the Moreno glacier and have some spare time this little trek is really worth it thanks to its bizarre mountain scenery combined with (even more) glaciers and an interesting alpine Lenga forest. From Calafate (Moreno glacier) you have to drive 220km over a reasonable gravel road (with superb vistas of the Andes) to El Chalten. The little town offers a fair amount of Hotels and some services. The trail head to Mt. Fitzroy starts nearby. You can choose whether youŽd like to explore the area on a two to three day trek or with two long (one-way) day hikes. The trek is relatively strenuous without any technical difficulties. If youŽre a mountaineer you will find a true wonderland here but better be world-class before scaling these mountains.
