The Annapurna Trek is one of Nepal`s most popular treks. The pure "specs" are impressive - 259km in about 17 days and a pass crossing at 5416m - this one is for serious hikers. Technically it isn`t overly difficult. There`re a few steep sections but unless you've a really serious problem with vertigo this will not be much of a problem. Climbing is not required. However, it is obviously a very strenuous trek and a very good fitness level is recommended. Mountain sickness can be a problem near the Thorong La pass only. If you hike the complete classic route there should be ample time to acclimatize though because the pass is reached well after a week so usually this shouldn`t be a problem for most. The trek has numerous highlights including rain-forests, deep gorges, a high altitude desert, a potentially icy pass crossing, awe-inspiring vistas of the Annupurna range and a very rich buddhistic culture - undoubtedly one of the best treks of the planet. Unfortunately therefore also somewhat crowded.

Expect a temperature range from +25C down to -20C. Plan your gear accordingly. Typical for many third-world countries the food can be a problem. Do yourself a favor and hire either a good cook or avoid at least the very cheapest restaurants on way. Many (most) hikers will suffer from mild forms of diarrhea but don`t risk the mother of `em all.

Finding your way around is not all that difficult if you've a good guidebook. The infrastructure on the trail is very developed with several lodges and restaurants around everywhere. Nonetheless most hiker's prefer to hire a crew including a guide, a cook and porters. For some this approach may feel a little colonial but the jobs are, although very strenuous, highly sought after by the locals. By western standard's the service is really dirt cheap so if you can do yourself and the locals a favor here.
