The Inca Trail in Peru is one of the all-time classics and that's for reasons because it offers everything from the vast mountain sceneries of the Andes, a (usually wet) jungle experience and lots of old Inca ruins on the way. It follows one of the old Inca routes to Machu Picchu, the undisputed highlight of Peru. Consequently the trail is very popular - there're 100+ companies in Cusco licensed to offer tours here - so don't expect to be alone here regarding a regulated maximum of 500 trekkers per day. If you accept this as a matter of fact it will be an outstanding experience. If not there're numerous other more remote "Inca Trails" around because the old route network spans several thousand kilometers along the western side of the Andes. The trail is moderately strenuous without any technical difficulties. The biggest challenge is the relatively high max. altitude of 4200m. It takes 4 days, about 45km and a few pass crossing to complete the trail.
The trail is located in the middle of the Andes a bit east of Cusco. You can access the trail head either by bus or train. The trail ends at the ruins of Machu Picchu from where you need to take the bus to the same named village in the valley below. The only exit from here is by train.
