The Tongariro (Northern-)Circuit is another of New Zealand`s "Great Walks". It offers some of the best volcanic scenery of the country. It is a barren, surreal landscape that leaves you in awe because it is so different from normal experience. It takes about 3 days to circle Mt Ngauruhoe starting at
Mangatepopo and finishing at Whakapapa Village. The trek also touches the
similar famous Tongariro Crossing which means that you will meet numerous day walkers on day 1. Once you've left the beaten path there's still much solitude
left. The track is fairly easy though you can spice it up by scaling Mt. Ngauruhoe (don't do it if you suffer from vertigo).
Typical for New Zealand you can enjoy all the comforts of the well maintained hut system so it is not necessary to carry a tent. Bus services from Whakapapa Village to the trail head are available so it's easy to organize the trek.
