The Rae Lakes Loop trail in Central California offers some of the finest scenery
in the Sierra Nevada. It is a very popular hike because of its convenient length
and the true loop layout. Consequently a booking system is in place to manage the
crowds. The trail also touches the famous long distance John Muir trail if you think
the loop is too short/soft for you.
Initially you walk through the typical Sierra forest. After reaching
the tree line you have vast panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. The
undisputed highlight are the Rae Lakes which you reach after 2 days. If you're
lucky you will be able to experience some stunning lake reflections here. After
scaling the 3651m Glen Pass the trail descends steadily back to your starting point.
There're no technical difficulties but there is an altitude gain of 2000m and all
with your heavy packs so a good level of fitness is a smart approach. The weather
conditions are generally very fine in summer but be prepared for some freaky
thunderstorms just in case. If you're lucky (or unlucky?) you may even spot a black
bear here - they will be around for sure ... :-)
