"Petra" is usually something where most people probably think of the girl next door.
When looking at the teaser image above some may also remember Indiana Jones (Part I). However, Petra is not only a movie set but also one of the most fascination ancient cities on mother earth similar in quality like Machu Picchu or some old Roman cities.
Petra is greek and means "Rock" - when looking at the old ruins it is obvious why they chose this name because the structures were carved right into it! The city was created by the Nabateans about 300BC but the history of the place dates back several thousand years more. Usually Petra is a place for day tourist (and there're lots of 'em) but it is also possible to combine Petra with a trekking experience. We did a 3 day variant which included the Petra complex, the nearby mountains and moody camps next to ancient tombs. True culture trekking. The trekking is generally easy here because most tour operators use jeeps to transport your main luggage from one camp to the next.
However, you have to hike some steep passages in a desert climate (it can be cold and misty in winter time though - see the gallery ...).
