The Lake Waikaremoana Track, a designated "Great Walk", is ... well ... just that - a track circling the corresponding lake in Te Urewera National Park in the northern center of NZ's North Island. However, it isn't as easy as it sounds because you actually need to climb a (moderately high) mountain which flanks the Lake to the south. The bluffs offer vast vistas of the National Park and the embedded lake. It is a quite steep descent though dense native forest back to the lake level. From here it is a fairly easy walk along the lake line to the water taxi pickup which can bring you back to your starting point.
Typical for a "Great Walk" the huts need to be pre-booked although usually you shouldn't have a problem to find free spaces. Thanks to the DOC huts you just need to carry your food supplies and clothing. Better take some rain gear with you - you will hike in tempered rain-forest after all. The quality of track is generally easy though things can get a little muddy after a rainfall and the tree roots may get strenuous at times so better take some good hiking boots.
