The Inland Pack Track is a semi-loop trail in New Zealand's Paparoa National Park. The park is more renowned for the "Pancake Rocks", a bizarre rock formation at the west coast whereas the rest of the park is mostly unnoticed by the tourist stream.
The hike follows two deep river gorges connected via a route (from the gold rush era) through the local rainforest. The rather cool aspect of the hike is the northern gorge because (coming from the south) the track dissolves at some stage and you have to follow the river bed ... or to be precise: you zigzag the river so make sure to take some good water sandals a la Teva or Keen. The usual place to spend the night under the Ballroom, an immense rock overhang. It is a shielded place where you can enjoy a vista of the stars - there's no need to take a tent unless you want to.
For obvious reasons the hike should not be undertaken after heavy rainfalls or with a unfavorable weather forecast.
As mentioned the Inland Pack Track is only a semi-loop so you can either try to hitchhike back to your starting place or arrange a bus shuttle.
