The Routeburn Track is sometimes referred to as an overflow alternative to the much more popular Milford track but it is actually a little more than just that. It is a very good introduction to the Fjordland and Mt. Aspiring National Parks. It can be done as a one-way route but alternatively you can create a loop by returning via the nearby Greenstone (or Caples) Track. The hikes are a mixture deep values, high mountains, beautiful mountain lakes and, naturally, rain-forests. In good weather the vistas are vast but the weather is a bit freaky here. On day one on the Routeburn Track we had snow ... in summertime. However, the weather is changing so rapidly here that you should have good chances to see the mountains at some stage. 8-) The Greenstone valley is a bit more protected so even if you had rain on the Routeburn Track it may be much better here. The two tracks are not directly coupled - you need to hike for several ks on a dusty road in between (quite boring). The Greenstone Track is pretty different with its wide open valley so it is not as varied as the Routeburn but still well worth the effort.

As mentioned the Routeburn Track is a "Great Walk" and as such subject to pre-booking. You may do so e.g. in the DOC office in Te Anau but in high season you should not rely on this. There are several huts on the way so it is not necessary to carry a tent (which you are not allowed to use on the Routeburn anyway). Apart from supplies good and warm rain gear is a must at all times as is insect repellent (DEET).
