The Wadi Rum is a place with a history - a real one naturally but also a Hollywood history. It got widely renowned by the movie "Lawrence of Arabia", a famous Royal Army officer who fought against the Turks with the help of some united Bedouin tribes. Some of the scenes took places in this area and the shown landscapes in the movie are stunning with towering mountain islands within a sea of sand. However, naturally a movie is only the next best thing of being there. Today you can explore the area on Camel Treks which can last for a day and even up to a week but you should at least spend two days to experience the nightly desert magic under the stars. You may argue that a Camel ride isn't the real thing but Wadis are dry riverbeds with deep, soft sand and as you can imagine this would be a very tiresome experience and frankly even none of the locals would consider to do so. Camels, on the other hand, are interesting creature and best of all they come with a free air-condition ... at least if they decide to move (which they normally do). The Wadi Rum is one of the hottest places around so these trips should only be considered in the local winter time. The temperature can still get pretty hot whereas you better take a good sleeping bag for the night - the sand doesn't keep the heat of the day for long and with no clouds around it can get very chilly. The region has a rather poor reputation regarding security but things aren't really that bad especially on such remote trips. Typical for the region you should organize the trips on location due to the much lower price levels.
