The Moses and Katherine mountains located on the Sinai peninsula (Egypt) are primarily pilgrim destinations but even without a religious background (like myself) it is a worthwhile trip. With an altitude of 2642m the Katherine mountain is the highest place on the Sinai and the nearby Moses mountain is not much smaller (2285m). Thanks to the pilgrim trails this is not a mountaineering experience but more a moderately strenuous hike - on the Moses mountain you may even purchase your Diet Coke from the small cafes here. Depending on the time of the year you either spend the night on one of the mountains or in the valley below. In January we preferred the latter variation because it can get pretty darn cold up there. The Sinai is a true desert which translates into very hot days and quite chilly nights so be prepared for both. The pilgrims may come here for the famous Katherine monastery in the valley and the Moses and St. Katherine chapels but the views from the mountain tops are superb. On a clear day (and most of them are) you can both see the Gulf of Suez to the west and the Gulf of Aqaba to the east from the Katherine mountain and watching the glowing sandstone during the sunrise and sunset is an awesome experience. You can organize the transportation, the camp and a guide both in nearby Nuweiba or in Sharm-El-Sheik.
